I had to get up early this morning because I have an appointment nearly 100 miles away at the clinic that's overseeing my HRT. I'm hoping that today is when I'll get my first prescription of progesterone. I'm at least going to ask about it.
While I was having my morning coffee and breakfast a thought occurred to me. I remember seeing so many hateful comments by talking heads on the far-Right, saying that transgender people are mentally ill because we suffer gender dysphoria. I also remember reading that GD is a psychological condition. The question came to mind, "What is the difference between mental illness and psychological condition?" The answer is as follows:
The terms "mental illness" and "psychological condition" are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings:
Mental Illness: This term refers to a wide range of mental health disorders that affect mood, thinking, and behavior. Mental illnesses are typically diagnosed based on specific criteria outlined in diagnostic manuals such as the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). Examples of mental illnesses include depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders. Mental illnesses often require medical treatment, which can include therapy, medication, or a combination of both.
Psychological Condition: This term is broader and can encompass a variety of mental health states that may not necessarily meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental illness. Psychological conditions can include temporary states like stress, grief, or adjustment disorders, as well as more chronic conditions that impact mental health but may not be classified as mental illnesses. Psychological conditions often benefit from therapeutic interventions, lifestyle changes, and coping strategies.
In summary, while all mental illnesses are psychological conditions, not all psychological conditions are classified as mental illnesses. Mental illnesses are diagnosed based on specific criteria and often require medical treatment, whereas psychological conditions can be broader and may include temporary or chronic states that impact mental well-being.
