Women - Cis, Trans, Real
"Trans women aren't real women!" UGH! How many times have we heard that one? Sometimes, I'd like to counter with, "Stupid people aren't real people." But, of course, trans women are real women! Just the same as stupid people are real people... they're just... you know... STUPID! The problem is not that trans women aren't real women; the problem is that too many people are stuck on the old ways of thinking. Instead of using the mindset, "this is the way we've always done things," the way forward is to accept the universal truth that change is the rule of growth.
Trans women are real women. Gender is an identity that goes beyond just biology, and it's about how a person feels and identifies themselves. Here are a few key points that might help to understand and support the idea that trans women are real women:
Gender Identity: Gender is not solely determined by physical characteristics at birth. It’s deeply personal and about how one identifies. When a trans woman identifies as female, she is expressing her authentic self.
Respect and Validation: Recognizing and respecting someone's gender identity is crucial. Using the correct name and pronouns for trans women affirms their identity and humanity.
Shared Experiences: While the experiences of cisgender women (women whose gender identity matches their sex assigned at birth) and transgender women can differ, there are many shared experiences, such as dealing with gender discrimination or societal expectations of women.
Medical Transition: Some trans women choose to undergo medical procedures like hormone therapy or surgery to align their physical appearance with their gender identity. This is a deeply personal choice and varies from person to person.
Cultural and Legal Recognition: Many societies and legal systems are increasingly recognizing and affirming the rights and identities of transgender people. This includes access to gender-affirming healthcare and legal documentation that reflects their gender identity.
Community and Support: There is a vibrant and supportive community of trans women and allies who celebrate and affirm each other’s identities. Connecting with such communities can be empowering and validating.
Trans women, like all women, deserve to be seen, respected, and celebrated for who we are. Embracing diversity in gender identities enriches our understanding of humanity. Earlier, I mentioned change. It's true that overall mindsets need to change, but just as societal norms must change so, too, must our manner of communication. Rather than screaming and ranting whenever we are misgendered, we should calmly and rationally express ourselves.
All screaming and ranting accomplishes is making our whole community look bad. "See there? They're all crazy!" Think before you speak! Refuse the urge to behave maniacally in the face of their ignorance. You will make more of a positive impression - not only for yourself, but the whole of the trans community - by acting in a rational and civilized manner, rather than reacting like a lunatic. You've heard the phrase, "Kill them with kindness?" That's the approach we need to take.
