Every Living Thing...

Happiness is often framed as a privilege—a reward earned through conformity, resilience, or societal validation. But at its core, happiness is not a luxury. It is a right. A fundamental truth that exists beyond politics, beyond bias, and beyond the narrow definitions imposed by those who seek to control who gets to thrive.

Benjamin Franklin once stated, “The Constitution guarantees you the right to pursue happiness. It’s up to you to catch it.” It is a powerful reminder that while the foundation of our democracy promises freedom, the ability to truly grasp happiness depends on the structures in place to protect that pursuit.

Yet, for the trans community, that pursuit is being systematically obstructed. The very politicians who swore an oath to uphold the Constitution—the document that guarantees all citizens the right to pursue happiness—are actively undermining it with anti-trans legislation. These laws are stripping away healthcare, erasing identities from legal recognition, and diminishing fundamental rights, all while disguising discrimination as policy.

But happiness—fullness of life—is not something anyone has the authority to grant or revoke. It is ours. It is intrinsic. It exists because we exist.

The idea that “every living thing has a right to a full and happy life” goes beyond advocacy. It’s a truth that transcends borders, identities, and social constructs. It reminds us that dignity and joy should be our starting point, not something we have to fight for. And yet, that fight remains necessary, because too many people refuse to recognize this right as inherent.

For those of us in the trans community, happiness is an act of defiance. It is a declaration that despite the forces working against us, we will carve out spaces where we can love ourselves freely, where we can walk in the world unafraid, where we can shape futures that reflect who we truly are.

Every breath we take is proof that we belong. Every moment of joy, no matter how small, is proof that happiness is not a privilege—it is ours.
