Holiday Issues

There are a myriad of issues confronting transgender people during the holiday season.  Here are some common issues they might face during the holiday season: Family Acceptance : Not all family members may accept or understand a transgender person’s identity. This can lead to tense or uncomfortable gatherings, misgendering, and invalidation of their gender. Misgendering and Deadnaming : During family events, transgender individuals might be misgendered or called by their birth name (deadnaming), which can be distressing and hurtful. Lack of Inclusive Holiday Traditions : Traditional holiday activities and events may not be inclusive of transgender identities, leading to feelings of exclusion or alienation. Travel Issues : Traveling can be particularly stressful, especially if identification documents don't match the person's gender identity. Transgender individuals may also face discrimination and harassment during travel. Mental Health Struggles : The holiday s...

Intersectionality Series Pt. 8: Transgender Geographic Location Intersectionality

Introduction      Geographic location plays a significant role in shaping the experiences of transgender individuals. From legal protections to social acceptance, the place where someone lives can dramatically influence their quality of life. Understanding how geographic location intersects with transgender identity helps highlight the disparities and challenges faced by transgender people around the globe and within different regions of a single country. As a trans advocate, it's essential to explore these geographic influences to better support and advocate for the transgender community. Legal Protections and Rights      Legal protections for transgender individuals vary widely depending on geographic location. In some countries and regions, comprehensive anti-discrimination laws protect transgender people in employment, housing, healthcare, and public accommodations. In others, there may be little to no legal recognition or protections, leaving tr...

The Ethical Debate: Restricting Gender-Affirming Healthcare for Children

Introduction      In recent years, the conversation around gender-affirming healthcare for transgender children has become a highly charged ethical and political issue. On one hand, there are strong advocates for providing access to gender-affirming care to support the well-being and mental health of transgender youth. On the other hand, some argue that it is morally necessary to restrict access to certain medical interventions for children. As a trans advocate, it is important to explore the ethical dimensions of this debate to understand the diverse perspectives and the potential impacts on transgender children. The Argument for Restricting Gender-Affirming Healthcare for Children      Those who support restricting gender-affirming healthcare for children often cite concerns about the long-term implications of medical interventions. Their arguments include: Age and Maturity : Critics argue that children and adolescents may lack the maturity and cog...

Intersectionality Series Pt. 7: Elderly Transgender Intersectionality

Introduction      As society becomes more aware and accepting of transgender identities, it’s essential to acknowledge the unique experiences of elderly transgender individuals. Many have navigated their gender journey in times when acceptance was far less common, facing significant adversity and resilience. As they age, transgender elders encounter distinct challenges, particularly in healthcare, social support, and representation. Healthcare Access and Affordability      Elderly transgender individuals often face significant barriers in accessing healthcare. Finding providers who are knowledgeable and respectful of their specific needs can be challenging. Many healthcare professionals lack training on transgender health issues, leading to inadequate or insensitive care. This can result in transgender elders avoiding medical treatment, which is particularly concerning given the increased health risks that come with aging.      Additio...

Intersectionality Series Pt. 6: The Intersection of Age and Transgender Experience

Introduction      In a world that is gradually becoming more aware and accepting of transgender identities, it's crucial to recognize that the transgender experience is not monolithic. Age plays a significant role in shaping how transgender individuals navigate their identities and the challenges they face. Understanding the intersectionality of age within the transgender community allows us to offer more nuanced support and advocacy for people at different stages of their lives. Transgender Youth: Growing Up Trans      For transgender youth, the journey of self-discovery often begins early. Many transgender individuals report feeling a disconnect between their assigned gender and their true identity from a young age. However, coming out as transgender during childhood or adolescence can be fraught with challenges. Bullying, lack of family support, and inadequate policies in schools can create hostile environments for transgender youth.      ...

Resources

This has been an issue of deep concern for me, as it probably has been for many others.  Please, be sure to share this with anyone you know who may need financial assistance paying for gender affirming surgeries.      There are a number of resources available to help transgender individuals pay for gender-affirming surgeries. These resources include:  Point of Pride's Annual Transgender Surgery Fund: This scholarship-like program provides direct financial assistance to trans folks who cannot afford their gender-affirming surgery.     Krysallis Anne Hembrough Legacy Fund: This fund covers 50% of the medical fees associated with gender-affirming surgery, with recipients required to match each dollar of funds received with a dollar of their own money or other money raised by the recipient.     Black Trans Men Top Surgery Grant: This grant provides financial assistance to Black trans men for top surgery.   ...

Intersectionality Series Pt. 5: Transgender Socioeconomic Intersectionality

Introduction      In our ongoing quest for equality and understanding, it is vital to highlight the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities. Among these, transgender individuals often experience multifaceted barriers, particularly at the intersection of their gender identity and socioeconomic status. Exploring this intersectionality provides crucial insights into the lived experiences of transgender people and underscores the urgent need for systemic change. Economic Disparities and Employment      Transgender individuals frequently encounter significant economic disparities. Employment discrimination remains rampant, with many transgender people reporting job loss, denial of employment, or workplace harassment due to their gender identity. This discrimination often pushes them into unstable or informal employment sectors, leading to precarious financial situations.      According to a survey by the National Center for Tran...

I had to get up early this morning because I have an appointment nearly 100 miles away at the clinic that's overseeing my HRT.  I'm hoping that today is when I'll get my first prescription of progesterone.  I'm at least going to ask about it.     While I was having my morning coffee and breakfast a thought occurred to me.  I remember seeing so many hateful comments by talking heads on the far-Right, saying that transgender people are mentally ill because we suffer gender dysphoria.  I also remember reading that GD is a psychological condition.  The question came to mind, "What is the difference between mental illness and psychological condition?"  The answer is as follows:      The terms "mental illness" and "psychological condition" are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings: Mental Illness : This term refers to a wide range of mental health disorders that affect mood, thinking, and behavio...

Intersectionality Series Pt. 4: Transgender Sexual Orientation Intersectionality

The intersection of gender identity and sexual orientation creates a diverse spectrum of experiences within the transgender community. While each individual's journey is unique, understanding the specific struggles faced by transgender individuals across different sexual orientations is crucial for creating a more inclusive and supportive society. In this blog post, we will explore the challenges faced by transgender individuals who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, and asexual. Transgender and Gay      Transgender individuals who identify as gay often navigate a complex landscape of acceptance and rejection. While the LGBTQ+ community can offer a sense of belonging, there are still instances where transgender gay men may face exclusion or misunderstanding within the gay community. Some of the challenges they encounter include: Dating and Relationships : Finding partners who are open to and respectful of their gender identity can be difficult....

Intersectionality Series Pt. 3: Transgender Racial Intersectionality

I feel the need to preface this entire post with my personal view.  First off, normally, I absolutely abhor any mention of race.  Race is used all too often as a weapon against whites.  This sort of behavior only serves to strengthen racial tensions, and it needs to stop.  Secondly, the government needs to stay out of this matter, as with all social issues.  When you get the government involved in ANY issue, it only gets worse.  If you want proof of that, research the war on drugs and the war on poverty.  Look at the level of each before the government's involvement, and then look at today's level.  It's the same with race.  However, I digress.  Since racism continues to be bolstered, the issue of transgender racial intersectionality should be addressed. Navigating Life at the Crossroads: The Struggles of Transgender People Facing Racial Intersectionality In our world, identity is multifaceted and complex, often influenced ...

Disabled Transgender Theories

A couple of posts back, I said I was going to look into any possible tie-ins to the fact that 39% of transgender people are disabled, or handicapped.  What I found is  there isn't a single theory that explains why a higher percentage of disabled individuals identify as transgender.  However, there are a few factors that might contribute to this correlation.     Shared Experiences of Marginalization:  Both disabled and transgender people face societal marginalization and discrimination.  This shared experience might create a sense of solidarity and understanding between the two communities.  That's the theory, anyway.  I'm not sure why it equates to disabled people being transgender, though.  It would seem to me that if such solidarity made disabled people become transgender, there would be an even higher number of disabled people among the transgender population.     Increased Awareness and Acceptance: ...

Intersectionality Series Pt. 2: Navigating Intersectionality: Understanding the Complex Lives of Transgender Individuals

Introduction In the vast landscape of human experience, identity is shaped by a myriad of factors, each influencing the other. For transgender individuals, navigating life means more than just embracing their gender identity—it involves a complex interplay of various identities such as race, socioeconomic status, disability, and sexuality. Understanding these intersections is crucial in fostering empathy, advocacy, and meaningful support for the transgender community. Race and Transgender Identity Race profoundly influences the experiences of transgender individuals. People of color often face unique challenges, including heightened discrimination, systemic racism, and cultural stigmas. For instance, Black and Latinx transgender women face disproportionately high rates of violence and unemployment. The compounded effects of racism and transphobia can create barriers to healthcare, education, and legal protections, making the journey toward self-acceptance and societal acceptance ...

Intersectionality Series Pt. 1: Transgender - Handicap Intersectionality and My Fucked Up Life

As a child with a bad leg and a speech impediment, I grew up believing that I was a freak.  Nobody wants to be a freak.  Right?  Then, as if that wasn't enough, I realized early on that I liked both, boys and girls, and I heard in church that that was wicked.  "Oh no," I thought.  "I'm going to Hell.  God will never love me," I cried.  And if all that wasn't enough, I grew up with a sex addiction, thanks to a certain adult male in my extended family getting his jollies with my mouth when I was about five.  I was doomed!  I just knew it!     When I was eleven, my mother, who was the only person from whom I received solace, passed away.  In one fell swoop, I was suddenly with no hope, whatsoever.  A couple of years after that is when it first happened.  That's when I experienced gender dysphoria for the first time.  I was thirteen years old.  I couldn't understand the thoughts going through...

Talking Gender Dysphoria

What is gender dysphoria?      Gender dysphoria is a psychological condition in which a person experiences significant distress or discomfort because their gender identity doesn't align with their sex assigned at birth.  The feeling can often be intense and can affect many aspects of a person's life.  It often involves wanting to live as a person of the opposite sex than that to which one was born, which might involve changing ones body, name, or pronouns to better suit ones gender identity. At what age does gender dysphoria start?      Gender dysphoria can start as young as 4 years of age.  Most known cases have been recorded to have begun between the ages of  4 and 7, although it's possible for symptoms not to appear until puberty, or even later in life.  Remember, each individual's experience is unique and there's no definite age for gender dysphoria to begin. Is gender dysphoria treatable, and how is it treated?     Of...

Possible Causes for the Increase In Transgenderism

Research shows that many factors are likely at play in the increase of the number of people coming out as Transgender.  Let's explore a few of them. Awareness and Acceptance:  Greater societal acceptance and visibility mean more people feel comfortable coming out as Transgender.  This phenomenon is not new.  Once upon a time, it was absolute taboo to be a homosexual.  Eventually, society became more open to the fact that homosexuals walked among us (that's the awareness).  Acceptance came in time, especially after laws were introduced  turning acts of violence against gays into a hate crime.  It's been said that you can't legislate morality, and I very much agree with that, however, it seems you can legislate acceptance.  Now, I'm not saying that being gay is immoral.  I don't think it ever was, in spite of what the Bible says.  But, hate is immoral and, in spite of the law, it still exists.  You just can't...

The Potentiality of Anxiety As a Side Effect of HRT

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a powerful tool for many transgender individuals, offering a pathway to a more authentic and comfortable life. Although HRT can bring about significant changes in an individuals physique and psychology, it can trigger emotional side effects, like anxiety. I, personally, have experienced several episodes of anxiety. I didn't understand why I was experiencing this for a while, because I have no recollection of undergoing such emotional upheavals in my adolescence. But one night, after a horrifying couple of moments, my wife said, “you're going through a hormonal change. You're going through adolescence!”      Fucking hell!      It turns out that the hormonal changes introduced by HRT can disrupt the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain and can cause increased anxiety, nervousness, and irritability. It's important to keep in mind that this is usually temporary.      There are so...
